C.I.A. Montgomery

We live in the greatest neighborhood. Cloverdale Idlewild is a historic neighborhood just outside downtown Montgomery with houses built in the 1920's -1930's. In a lot of ways it still feels like life back then too. Our neighbors brought us cookies when we moved in, there were kids running the streets on Halloween and there will be a group of carolers followed by a beverage cart next week. We have the most spectacular bike parade for the 4th of July with trailers pulling kids splashing in wading pools and throwing candy. We built a paper mache Thomas the Train float for the Christmas parade (which was a lot of fun too). We have a neighborhood park which hosts concerts in the spring, political rallies, and Halloween dog costume parades. This has to be the greatest area in Montgomery. However the latest neighborhood gathering was so unspectacular it was spectacular. They had the annual gazebo lighting ceremony at the park Sunday night. We were running just a couple minutes late, but considering how big all the other neighborhood functions are this shouldn't have been a problem. We were about half a block away when we saw the lights turn on--all four strands of them in their extremely unmajestic glory. It was kind of sad. We visited with the other 8 neighbors that had shown up and let the kids swing for a while then headed home, unamazed. Maybe next year the neighborhood association can take pointers from the house with over 150 light up Christmas lawn ornaments or the house with the $.50 per play stuffed animal claw machine in their front yard. It is definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
